โThe more constraints one imposes, the more one frees oneโs self. Igor Stravinsky
David Epstein shares this quote in his new book, “๐๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐
On the surface, itโs a paradox.
How could imposing constraintsโpurposely using less than whatโs available to you, be it content, structure, time, etcโproduce a better presentation? But itโs true, and in last Fridayโs post, we explained how โfreedomโ makes you a terrible presenter.
How do we fix this? Epstein shares a strategy called โ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ,โ a two-phase process developed by Barnard psychology professor Patricia Stokes:
1๏ธโฃ Use โ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ฑ๐ฒโ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ to stop using your typical or familiar approaches to creating presentations
2๏ธโฃ Use โ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒโ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ to force you into creating presentations using a new, better method
Never make your company/business/solution/proposal or you personally the primary focus of the presentation:
2๏ธโฃ Follow the โ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐-๐๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐:โ cap your content quantity such that you can explain it thoroughly in no more than one-third of total meeting time
Forbid yourself from using jargon or from failing to explain every meaningful term (including abbreviations) and ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐, not yours
Put your presentation content to bedโfinish itโ๐๐ญ ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฌ before the date of your presentation (even further in advance for very important presentations)
Structure your content into a โ๐๐ก๐ซ๐๐-๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ฒโ (see graphic). It liberates you to focus on great contentโas Epstein writes of the haiku form of poetry, โThe form itself is the engine of creativityโ
(1-2 for 1st movement, 3-4 for 2nd movement, 1-2 for 3rd movement)
Donโt just give them facts & data: tell them what it means
Budget at least 30 minutes per day, for at least three consecutive days, to ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐, out loud, your presentation
