David Epstein shares this quote in his new book, “๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜…: ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—จ๐˜€ ๐—•๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.”

On the surface, itโ€™s a paradox.

How could imposing constraintsโ€”purposely using less than whatโ€™s available to you, be it content, structure, time, etcโ€”produce a better presentation? But itโ€™s true, and in last Fridayโ€™s post, we explained how โ€œfreedomโ€ makes you a terrible presenter. ๐ˆ๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐จ ๐ƒ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซP๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ.

How do we fix this? Epstein shares a strategy called โ€œ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ,โ€ a two-phase process developed by Barnard psychology professor Patricia Stokes:
1๏ธโƒฃ Use โ€œ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฒโ€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ to stop using your typical or familiar approaches to creating presentations
2๏ธโƒฃ Use โ€œ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒโ€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ to force you into creating presentations using a new, better method

1๏ธโƒฃ Never make your company/business/solution/proposal or you personally the primary focus of the presentation: ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐š๐ฎ๐๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž โ€œ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ซโ€
2๏ธโƒฃ Follow the โ€œ๐‘๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ž๐ง๐ž-๐“๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐:โ€ cap your content quantity such that you can explain it thoroughly in no more than one-third of total meeting time
3๏ธโƒฃ Forbid yourself from using jargon or from failing to explain every meaningful term (including abbreviations) and ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐ฎ๐๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐š๐ ๐ž, not yours
4๏ธโƒฃ Put your presentation content to bedโ€”finish itโ€”๐š๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ before the date of your presentation (even further in advance for very important presentations)

Then, ๐š๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž โ€œ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐žโ€ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ:
1๏ธโƒฃ Structure your content into a โ€œ๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ž๐ž-๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐’๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ฒโ€ (see graphic). It liberates you to focus on great contentโ€”as Epstein writes of the haiku form of poetry, โ€œThe form itself is the engine of creativityโ€
2๏ธโƒฃ Use ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ (1-2 for 1st movement, 3-4 for 2nd movement, 1-2 for 3rd movement)
3๏ธโƒฃ ๐ƒ๐ซ๐š๐ฐ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐š๐ฎ๐๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž. Donโ€™t just give them facts & data: tell them what it means
4๏ธโƒฃ Budget at least 30 minutes per day, for at least three consecutive days, to ๐ฉ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž, out loud, your presentation
